The Trivialization of Art

The Trivialization of Art

Over the years I’ve often run into a pervasive attitude, especially in the business and technical fields, on the value of art. In the past I worked with a lot of technical people, who would typically laugh, or shake their heads and walk away when I talked about art or artists.

There seems to be a tacit agreement in many circles that art is a kind of trivial, pointless indulgence that flakes get into because:

a)      They can’t do anything else

b)      They have nothing ‘important’ to contribute to society

But every day those same critics get up in the morning from their bed designed by an artist, put on clothes designed by artists, get into their car designed by an artist, drive to work listening to music written and performed by artists, pursue their career in a building designed by artists, go home and watch shows on TV or at the movies written, designed, filmed, directed, and acted in by artists, or play video games designed by artists.

Most likely their homes (which were designed by artists) are decorated with pictures produced by artists, the music on their stereos (designed by artists) was written and performed by artists, and on and on. I submit that these people’s lives (and the lives of everybody on the planet for that matter) would be profoundly diminished if it weren’t for art.

So if you’re a writer, or any other kind of artist, the next time someone tries to imply that what you’re doing is trivial or a waste of time, ask them if they’d like to live in a world without art.

Thanks! Hey, maybe in my next blog post!

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the internet the simplest thing to
be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about.
You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole
thing without having side effect , people could take
a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Hi, and thanks for the comment. I’m not planning to talk again specifically about this issue, but there will be lots of future blog entries along a similar vein. Hope you enjoy them.

I am really loving the theme/design of your weblog.
Do you ever run into any browser compatibility problems?
A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not operating correctly
in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?

Thanks, I’m glad you like the site. I haven’t extensively tested it on different platforms, but I haven’t had any complaints so far. Sorry, I’m really not that knowledgeable, and can’t offer any advice.

Have you ever thought about publishing an ebook or guest
authoring on other websites? I have a blog based on the same ideas you discuss and would really like
to have you share some stories/information. I know my subscribers would enjoy
your work. If you are even remotely interested, feel free to shoot me an e mail.

      Hi,
Thank you, and I’m glad you enjoyed the post. My website contains several ebooks I’ve written. If you’re referring to an ebook of my blog entries, I’ve never planned to do that. If at some time in the future I can put together enough posts that I think are worth reading, I might consider it.
